In Search of Darkness returns with their latest documentary, celebrating my favorite era of horror—the 90s!

I was ecstatic that they reached out to me to review their 1995-1999 edition, because that was such a special time in my life of horror movie discovery. During those years, I was in my early teens and truly immersing myself in the genre. I spent countless sleepovers with my girlfriends, renting movies like The Blair Witch Project, and deliberately scaring ourselves to the point of sleepless nights.

This documentary explores the most popular movies of each year, providing insights into their production, reception, and cultural impact. It also features rare deep cuts that I enjoy adding to my watchlist, including obscure scenes and lesser-known facts. My favorite part was discovering and listening to behind-the-scenes footage and stories of Urban Legend, one of my comfort horror films, which I had never seen before.

Horror often reflects societal fears and tensions, and a surge in technology-related horror stories characterized this era. Additionally, there was widespread fear of the approaching millennium, cults, and doomsday scenarios, as well as themes of societal collapse, illustrating a collective sense of fear and uncertainty about the future.

But not only does the doc go over some iconic films from each year featuring these topics, but it also covers meta-fueled horror and the rise of teen horror with movies like Scream and Bride of Chucky—scores and soundtracks, and how they were made and crafted. The Faculty and The Craft are among the albums featuring epic covers and popular songs of the time. Unmade 90s projects, like John Carpenter’s Creature from the Lagoon, that were squashed by Jurassic Park. The rise of J-horror, like Ringu and Audition, and how they influenced filmmakers today, and so much more.

This doc is packed with over six hours of interviews with names in the horror world, including Robert Cargill, John Carpenter, Corey Taylor from Slipknot, Jamie Kennedy, Heather Langenkamp, Mike Flanagan, and one of my favorite actresses, who I’m so happy to see back in the spotlight, Rebecca Gayheart.

The doc covers more than 70 movies, including favorites such as Demon Knight, In the Mouth of Madness, Tales from the Hood, From Dusk till Dawn, Idle Hands, and Deep Blue Sea, among others. It also highlights some lesser-known gems such as Frostbite: Wrath of the Wendigo, Lord of Illusions, Don’t Look Up, Bloody Muscle Body Builder in hell, Sometimes They Come Back Again…and more!

In Search of Darkness is an extensive documentary series that delves into the history, impact, and evolution of the horror genre, making it the unrivaled choice for dedicated fans.
